Description
Esperanza: As you review the painting and your eyes go from side to side and up and down I hope the first object to catch your eye is the empty clothes pins. These represent how all immigrants typically come here with nothing. This also represent a clear vision of the American Dream. So many migrants have been able to work so hard for everything they have earned. Immigrants typically take and do the jobs most people don't want to perform: farm workers, factory workers, and all the menial jobs. The little girl truly represents me as she stands there waiving her flag not in defiance but in collaboration with the dress she is wearing of Old Glory. It is a very clear dichotomy all Mexican-Americans have to grapple with. Typically we have to be able to speak Spanish and English in a moment. This is my story and my view of current events. As you see the little girl you will notice the dog tags. I am a proud mother of a US veteran. This was simply a way to identify the little girl as the Commander-in-Chief himself referred to me. The little dog wearing the jacket was my attempt at satire. I was so disappointed when the first lady decided to wear this particular jacket on her first visit to the children's internment camps. In the shadow of Esperanza the statements are clear and factual of things we've been called and for all to refer to.
